The Boring company has announced its first leg of a major project, a Loop transport system between Washington D.C. and Baltimore. The expected journey time between the two cities is 15 minutes.

The Boring Company is working on transport project on both the East and West coasts of the United States that aim to reduce traffic congestion and reduce travel time between major cities.

Loop to end traffic congestion

The company released a statement detailing the first leg of the East coast project saying, “The DC-to-Baltimore Loop would consist of the construction of a set of parallel, twin underground tunnels. This transportation system would create a significant public benefit due to decreased commute times, decreased urban congestion, decreased public transportation trip times, decreased transportation costs/fares, and decreased greenhouse gas emissions.”

The statement goes on to describe that the twin tunnels will run in parallel for approximately 56 kilometers from downtown DC to downtown Baltimore.

The company hopes this first section of tunnel will serve as a launching point for further development that would eventually be extended to New York City. Interestingly, the Boring Company intend to use a transportation system which they refer to as a ‘Loop’ rather than the Hyperloop which is what has been developed on the West coast.

The Loop will prioritize people and bikes

The loop is described as “a high-speed underground public transportation system in which passengers are transported on autonomous electric skates traveling at 125-150 miles per hour. Electric skates will carry between 8 and 16 passengers or a single passenger vehicle.”

If the loop does come to fruition the company says the cost to users will be comparable to current public transport prices and that bikes and people will take priority over cars.

According to the Boring Company's site, the tunneling will take between 12 and 20 months to complete and would need the cooperation of many levels of both state and federal government.

Boring Tunnel funded by flamethrowers

The plan for the D.C. to Baltimore route is detailed on the company's site and provides a rigorous FAQ section answering common queries like how the tunnels will affect or be affected by earthquakes. The Boring Company was developed to reduce the cost of major tunneling projects which has been an inhibitor to most major underground transportation systems in the past.

The Boring Company plans to reduce the cost of major tunneling projects by a factor of ten that would allow for mass underground transportation systems to be a reality for cities across the globe. The company recently completed a funding round that saw it sell branded hats and flamethrowers, raising approximately $10 million in just a few weeks.

The company's West Coast plans are currently missing from their website but they are likely to still be involved with the HyperLoop One project that aims to connect major East Coast cities via a transportation system that uses magnetic levitation.
